Presenting Asher Treleaven in ‘Bad Dandy’
One of Australia’s comedic luminaries, Asher Treleaven, is gracing us with his latest show ‘Bad Dandy’ at this year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival. It was a pleasure to work with Asher and his team once again in creating the show’s visual identity. Asher explained, over a coffee, that ‘Bad Dandy’ was a slight departure from his previous material. This time around, we were after something a little more cheeky, bizarre and sexually ambiguous. These were my initial ideas:
I was focused on capturing the mood of the show typographically. All three have a hammy retro feel to compliment the irony of Asher’s performance. Though the feedback was overall positive, we agreed we needed something a little bolder and colourful. This poster really needed to stand out among a plethora of other gig advertisements.
The below concept was inspired by Terry Gilliam’s collage work for Monty Python’s Flying Circus. That displacing sense of humour reminded me of Asher’s style of comedy so it felt fitting:
Though a good concept, it was perhaps a little cluttered in an already crowded space. When considering the design, the artwork is just as important as its environment. However, we liked the texture and aesthetic so we pulled it back to something a little more palatable. The title typography is proudly hand generated and the final result is below,

Mutation Theatre presents ‘Love Me Tender’
Hey guys,
I’m so excited to be a part of Mutation Theatre’s latest show ‘Love Me Tender’. This was a quick request from Pat, Mutation Theatre’s founder. Helping develop Mutation’s visual identity, it’s really great to see how that translates across other formats. You can see my post about creating the identity here. I’ve been a fan of Mutation Theatre’s work since their adaptation of my favorite graphic novel, Shaun Tan’s ‘The Arrival‘. The process behind creating a Mutation Theatre show is definitely true to its name. Though they are scripted by some of Australia’s most talented writers, the rehearsal process is open to manipulation and growth of story and character.
The brief was pretty simple, utilize the beautiful publicity photo taken by the supremely talented Sarah Walker and add show details. The rest was up to me. The show’s description is below and it sounds amazing:
A powerful vision of the beauty and brutality of contemporary Australian life, Tom Holloway’s extraordinary play explores our response to catastrophic bushfires, the challenges of being a parent, society’s sexualisation of pre-teen girls, and the significance of love when faced with tragedy. Directed by Patrick McCarthy, multi-award winning independent company Mutation Theatre present the Victorian premier of this important work by one of Australia’s most talented playwrights (Tom Holloway).
The hand generated typography aimed to highlight the naivety and insecurity of preteen girls. To me, ‘Love me tender’ sounds a little like a gentle plea. Eerie.

Year of the Snake with LK Boutique
Hi all,
Happy Chinese New Year for all those who are celebrating. We now enter the year of the water snake; charming, charismatic and driven. I had the pleasure of working with TILT Creative on an illustration for Crown Casino’s LK Boutique. They were after a classy, calligraphic snake to wrap around the LK logo. The process is below..
The end result (below) was a collaboration between myself and the TILT team. It was great to see our individual visions of the project come together so well.

Mete’s New York Adventure. Episode 1
Hey guys, I’m heading to New York to see what I can make of my creative career. Enjoy Episode 1 as I walk you all through the process of getting to the Big Apple.
Arigato Japan!
I couldn’t get to sleep the night I came home from Japan, so I watched ‘Lost In Translation’. Usually I get a little rush of pride when I see a film location that I’ve visited, like Harry Potter’s platform 9 3/4 in London or Grand Central Station in every movie based in New York. When I saw Bob flicking through the TV channels in a typical Japanese hotel room or Charlotte browsing a chaotic arcade, it definitely felt familiar but I understood that isolated feeling. Until Japan, I had never felt so different to the people around me. Daily experiences proved the Japanese people to be supremely polite and private about their daily business. Though I would often be the only furry faced white guy on the train carriage, nobody stared or gestured toward me. However, the Japanese people I met were some of the most kindhearted, generous and inviting people I have ever met. Once you meet anybody, you unlock these amazing personalities you’ll never meet anywhere else.
Traveling solo through a country whose language is beyond you while the tourist season is down does give you the opportunity to be truly alone. Conveniently, this is exactly what I needed. I would often go days only uttering the occasional arigato or gochiso-sama deshita. I would only really utilize English while on Skype with family and friends. As a result, most of my time was spent walking, looking, eating and drawing. And Japan will feed you like no other place in the world. There wasn’t a single meal that didn’t amaze me. Whether it was a humble, spirit lifting ramen or baby octopus stuffed with quail egg on a stick, I wanted to have it all. If I didn’t know what it was, I ate it.
I’m inspired by good food and discovery of any kind, be it places, people or objects. Below is a selection of sketches I did during those moments,
I’ve been home for the past two months and have been taking some time to earn some money and figure out the next move. The freelance work’s really been picking up and I have some really exciting projects to show you in the next couple months, I can’t wait to show you. I’m currently planning a move to New York in April on a one year Graduate working Visa. I think now is a good time for me to go becuase I really don’t have anything to lose. I’ll keep you all posted. In the meantime, thank you for reading and we’ll talk soon
